Every fall, Pumpkin City Designs installs thousands of pumpkins throughout Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Potomac, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and the surrounding communities.
But one of the parts of Pumpkin City Designs that means the most to Stephanie and our family actually happens after the season is over.
When we return to remove our fall displays, our goal is not simply to throw everything away.
Our pumpkin donation Maryland program gives suitable pumpkins a second purpose after seasonal cleanup.
We work to collect suitable pumpkins and donate them to local farms and animal organizations where they can be put to good use.
Why This Matters So Much to Stephanie and Our Family
This was important to Stephanie from the beginning.
When you work with thousands of pumpkins every fall, you quickly realize how much seasonal material could simply end up being discarded when the season is finished.
Stephanie did not want that to be the end of the story.
She personally spent a great deal of time searching for local farms and animal organizations that could actually use the pumpkins.
That meant making calls, asking questions, finding the right places, coordinating drop-offs, and building relationships with organizations willing and able to accept them and finding the places is only the beginning.
Some of the farms and organizations are a significant distance away. At the end of an already very busy fall season, donating the pumpkins can mean loading trucks and spending hours driving to different areas, unloading, and sometimes making multiple trips.
It would certainly be easier to simply dispose of everything. But that was never what Stephanie wanted Pumpkin City Designs to do. If suitable pumpkins can help feed animals instead of going directly into the waste stream, she believes the extra work is worth it.
Our family feels the same way.
The Care Starts Before a Pumpkin Ever Reaches Your Porch
The process actually begins much earlier. A tremendous amount of work goes into preparing our pumpkins before they ever arrive at a customer’s home.
Stephanie is especially particular about cleaning and inspecting them.
The first reason is our customer.
We want the pumpkins arriving at your home to be clean, attractive, and in the best condition possible.
But knowing that many suitable pumpkins could ultimately be donated after the fall season gives us another reason to take that preparation seriously.
The pumpkins are cleaned and inspected before installation. Washing and scrubbing helps remove dirt and can reduce some surface residues. We do not claim that cleaning eliminates every possible residue, nor do we decide what is appropriate for every type of animal. The farms and organizations receiving the pumpkins determine what they are comfortable accepting and how those pumpkins are ultimately used.

Pumpkin Donation Maryland: From Your Front Porch to a Local Farm
For several weeks, one of our pumpkins might sit on the front steps of a home in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Potomac, Georgetown, McLean, or Alexandria. It might be part of a family’s first fall display. It might decorate the entrance to a business. It might become the backdrop for family photographs, trick-or-treaters, neighborhood gatherings, and memories. Then fall ends.
When we return for cleanup, we remove the display and sort through the seasonal materials. Suitable pumpkins are collected, loaded, and prepared for donation.
From there, we transport them to the farms and animal organizations Stephanie has worked hard to find.
We love knowing that a pumpkin can spend October making someone’s home beautiful and then potentially serve another purpose afterward.
